AWESOME Blogfest to Celebrate Independence Day!!

Yeah, I know!
The 4th of July is done and gone, but hey, we're still going to celebrate it
ALL MONTH LONG

Okay, so maybe not ALL month, but we're sure going to give it a try on
JULY 15th
(TODAY)
with an
Independence Day Blogfest.

The rules are simple. Just post a flash fiction piece of 250 words or less. Here's my contribution:

My Independence

While the nation is celebrating the freedom of our country, I’m celebrating the freedom of my spirit. Never mind the fact that my body lay in a bloody heap on the kitchen floor. I’m thrilled to be dead and finally free of a body I hate. You see, at only sixteen, I weigh as much as a linebacker for the New England Patriots, have average skin, average brown hair, and nothing about me is beautiful.
I guess by now you’re wondering why the blood, right? I was supposed to clean the kitchen, but clumpsy me dropped the bottle of dish soap—which exploded over everything. As I stepped through the mess, I slipped on the slime. Next thing I knew, I flew backward, struck my head on the counter and fell to the floor.
To add insult to injury, the patriotic sundress I’m wearing flipped up, exposing my undies—those would be buffalo-butt-briefs to all you skinny people out there—leaving me flashing my red, white and blues.
I try to take a step back, but find my spiritual feet glued to my physical ones. I lift and pull, but it’s like stringy pizza cheese—I get them a few inches apart, but then my feet snap back together. I want to dance around the room, try out my new freedom. But nope—I’m stuck. I guess being dead isn’t so great after all.

Now, head on over to Ali Cross' blog for a list of all the other blogfest participants. ENJOY!

  3. Love the undies comment! At first I was worried she killed herself, but then had to laugh when she slipped on soap and cracked her head open. Oh my. I totally relate to her clumsiness. Great character voice!

  5. Love the voice. The undies part made me laugh too and the fact that she's stuck, even after she's died.

  16. At first I thought it was a man until the line about the patriotic sundress. Interesting character. She's not really dead is she - too interesting to kill off.
