Squirrel!! Or Rather . . . Chocolate!!!

In an attempt to become more healthy and shed a few (okay, a LOT) of pounds, my husband and I went shopping Monday night in search of healthy food. We went to Costco first and filled up on low calorie, low salt, low fat, high fiber, low carb everything and felt pretty good about our choices.

Next, we went to Walmart. I needed socks, the pretty ones with colorful stripes and fun designs. They make me happy. We also bought a few more things to add to that Healthy Shelf in our pantry.

And then . . .

We stood in the check out line.

I swear, the things they put on those little shelves near the check out are evil creatures that reach out and grab you by that little part of your brain that makes you crave things like chocolate. You wouldn't think something so innocent would have so much pull on a person, especially after I'd made a commitment to make better choices.  But there it was, something new we hadn't tried before and our little brains just had to have it.

My husband, AKA: my enabler, reasoned that they were small and I could just ration them and have one a day.

PPFFFFFFFFFFTT!!! Yeah, right!!

Well, that little bag of Hershey's "drops" somehow made it into my cart along with a Reeses and a Zero candy bar, because if MOM is going to get candy, then the rest of them have to have it too. UGH!

So, I'm curious. How do you stop from being distracted? Both in writing and in life's challenges?

  1. Dude - I am right there with ya on the goals! And yea, I have to go cold turkey through sheer willpower initially. they, IDK, thigns get a bit easier for me...once I have some habits in place

  3. Hubby and I have both been on a diet since October. Then the holidays hit. Talk about temptation!!! Thanksgiving pies followed close by Christmas cookies. Yes, we were tempted. Yes, we ate some, but we made it through the holidays only gaining a few ounces. So here's the thing, portion control. And then give the rest to the kids. It's not easy, but so worth it.

Good luck, Christine! I'm behind you all the way.

  4. I'm always distracted by something (like I'm supposed to be editing right now, but here I am reading blogs), so if you figure out a solution, I'd sure love to hear it. As for chocolate, just a little never hurt, right? ;)

  5. I'm with Stephanie. I'm always getting distracted. I'm supposed to be writing, critiquing, and running. What am I doing? Reading blogs! I'm sorry I'm no help at all.

  6. I'm ROFL because the other day I had a GREAT day. I worked out! I stayed within my calorie budget! It was the end of the day and I was a WINNER!!!

Then David decided he NEEDED warm chocolate chip cookies. He actually asked me if that would be okay because he didn't want to make things hard on me. I said "sure, I can have ONE." (and because I'm super generous I said ... go ahead honey)

    So he went ahead.

Then he put the plate of WARM CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES (seriously!? i'm supposed to resist their warm yumminess?) with THREE COOKIES for me on it RIGHT BETWEEN US ON THE COUCH!!

Yeah, you guessed it. I ate all three cookies and went WAY over my calorie budget and went to bed depressed and mad at myself. :(

  7. I've just come to the conclusion that I can't have certain things. I'm so weak when it comes to food that I just don't buy it. That way, it won't be in my house. When I do fall to temptation, I always regret it. My motto? A moment on the lips. A lifetime on the hips. This helps me. Most of the time. LOL

  8. I tell myself that I can have it next time. That yes, I absolutely can have it, I'm just putting it off until next time. Then next time comes and I do the same thing.

Sometimes I give in, but this works pretty well for me. Also, eating before I go shopping helps a lot. It's when I'm hungry that everything calls to me!
