Friendly THURSDAY - Kimberly Job

Yep, that's right folks. Friendly Friday is a day early this week due to a contest starting tomorrow. Be sure to come back and take advantage of all the great prizes. And for today . . . I'd like to introduce Kimberly Job, author of I'll Know You By Heart. Take it away Kim.

Kimberly Job was born in Utah, the middle of three children, and the only girl. She graduated from Utah Valley University with a degree in Business Management which later proved useful as she ran a successful small business. She and her husband, Scott, have a combined family of ten children--seven boys and three girls. Kimberly loves being a mom and feels that raising exceptional children is her most valuable mission in this life.

Many times while growing up, escaping into the pages of a book created a safe haven from difficulties in her own life. Her writing reflects the many personal experiences she has gone through and offers insight on difficult issues from a refreshing gospel perspective.

Guest Post:

The Perfectionist in your Head

Most of you have them—the internal voices in your head that say you’re messing up, that your writing is worthless. Sometimes, it makes you wonder why you even bother.

Most beginning writers worry about whether or not they have any talent. They wonder whether all the effort they put into their writing will be worth it. There’s only one way to find the answer—write.

If you want to be a good swimmer, you have to get in the water and swim. It’s the same with writing. If you want to grow as a writer, sit down and write. The more you write, the better you will become. Reading will also help. Once you begin to write, you will never read the same again. As I read, I’m constantly looking for interesting phrases, plot twists, catchy dialogue, and creative characters.

You can also talk with other writers, join critique groups, and attend conferences and workshops. But none of these will improve your writing as much as plenty of practice. Only through writing will you discover for yourself what your strengths and weaknesses are as a writer.

Most writers do their best work if they don’t worry about technical correctness as they write. Getting caught up in details can distract you and slow down your momentum. So, instead of trying to fix every little mistake as you write, focus on what’s most important—getting the words onto the page. You can always edit later, but you can’t edit a blank page.

So, what do you do about those pesky voices in your head? Just write in spite of them. Over time, they will get quieter. They may pop up again unexpectedly, but if you keep on writing you will triumph in the end.

Thanks for being my guest today, Kim. I totally agree with your post. I've had way too many of those voices in my head lately and fighting them can sometimes be challenging, but I know if I just keep at it and don't give up, someday I'll have what it takes to get that book published.

Here's a little blurb about Kimberly's book due to be released this month.

Back Cover:

The day Stephanie Roberts met Jared Wakefield, she didn't realize they'd met before. Running from an abusive marriage and trying to safeguard her children, she turns to Jared for support, but he needs more from her than she might be capable of giving. With her abusive husband looming in her past, the difficulties they must overcome to be together seem insurmountable.
Is it possible for love to conquer all? I'll Know You By Heart is a timeless romance that explores the possibility that relationships span the entire realm of eternity. A story about abuse, hardship, and betrayal, it is ultimately a story about the healing power of everlasting true love.

  2. Hi CK! Great guest post, Kim. I love this part *So, what do you do about those pesky voices in your head? Just write in spite of them.* It's hard to get past the voices, but you really just have to put on ear plugs and plow on.

  7. That was a great post! My advice for nasty voices in the head is to turn them into the villain of the book :D use their evilness against your hero (since that's exactly what they're already doing) and then let your hero BLOW THEM AWAY!!! The victory will be all the more sweet :)

Thanks for the reminder Kimberly. Even writers who have been going at it for dozens of years run into that snag.

  9. Great blog Kim! I know that perfectionist all too well. Thankfully, I've managed to shut her in the tower room. Problem is, that I've lost the key and sometimes have a hard time getting her out when I need her ;)

    Congrats on your book! ♥
