Friendly Friday - Trina Boice

Trina Boice grew up in California and recently moved to Las Vegas. In 2004 she was honored as the California Young Mother of the Year, an award which completely amuses her 4 sons. She earned two Bachelor’s degrees from BYU where she competed on the Speech and Debate team and the Ballroom Dance Team, winning national titles for both teams. She was President of the National Honor Society Phi Eta Sigma and served as ASBYU Secretary of Student Community Services.

Trina also studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain and later returned there to serve an LDS mission in Madrid for 1 ½ years. She has a Real Estate license, Travel Agent license, 2 Master’s degrees, and a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, although she’s the first one to admit she’d pass out from fright if she were ever really attacked by a bad guy.

She worked as a Legislative Assistant for a Congressman in Washington D.C., and was given the “Points of Light” Award and Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her domestic and international community service. She wrote a column called “The Boice Box” for a newspaper in Georgia, where she lived for 15 years. She taught Spanish at a private high school and ran an appraisal business with her husband for 20 years. She currently writes for Roots Television and Go2.com and is the National Director of Marketing for Multi-Pure Corporation.

Trina was selected by KPBS in San Diego to be a political correspondent during the last election year. If she told you what she really did she’d have to kill you.

INTERVIEW:

1. What books are you reading right now?
The scriptures (Duh). I always have several books on my night-stand that I'm working on at the same time. Last night I started reading "Meltdown" by Ben Elton. Our economy is in serious trouble and it looks like the American public is starting to finally wake up to our "awful situation." Not exactly "feel-good" reading.
2. Did you do anything special for Valentine’s Day?
My husband wrote famous love quotes on individual roses and hid them all over the house. We attended a Singles Conference together where I was a guest speaker and then we stayed for the dinner and evening entertainment to celebrate the fact that we're not single any more.
3. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I absolutely LOVE ice cream and can eat any flavor happily. More please.
4. What are your writing plans for this year?
I am currently working on the 2011 edition of "Ready Resource for Relief Society" which will be published by Cedar Fort Books in December. I'm also busily working on a service idea book, Family Home Evening idea book, and a collection of conversion stories. I always have several projects going on at once and then when I get a serious deadline I start to focus on that one more until it's done. I love the creative process of writing and can't seem to type fast enough as the ideas fly out of my head and onto the keyboard.
5. You have accomplished a lot of impressive things in your life
sofar. What are you most proud of and why?
I'm most impressed with the fact that I was able to carve some time out of my insanely busy day yesterday to take a nap!
6. Where do you go when you need to unwind?
I unwind best at the beach in some tropical location at an all-inclusive resort. Unlimited guacamole & chips..mmm....I recharge best and become most energized at BYU Education Week where I get to learn, grow, meet other authors, do book signings and develop new ideas.
7. What type of music do you like?
I love Pandora.com where I can create "radio" stations that play my favorites, depending on what mood I'm in. I have a Journey/Styx station when I want to rock to good 'ole 80's tunes, a "Wicked" station when I want to sing to Broadway hits if no one is listening to my horrible voice, a "Michael Buble/Jason Mraz" station when I'm feeling jazzy, and a "Josh Groban" station when I want to feel inspired and pretend I'm a famous conductor.
8. What is the best church calling you ever held?
It's whatever church calling I presently have! Even though it's not necessarily a "calling", I love teaching Seminary. It's a ridiculous amount of work and I'm NOT a morning person, but I just love teaching the gospel and especially to fun teenagers who make me laugh every day. Right now I'm the Cub Master for my ward's Scout Pack and I write the ward newsletter...two very fun callings!

  2. She sounds like a mormon superhero. She does all of that and has four kids. Wow!! I'm happy if I can crawl out of bed, do two loads of laundry, shower, write and have kid time (usually that's a no-cook night cuz I'm exhausted). LOL, WOW!! Impressive.

  6. Aw shucks you guys! Thanks for making me feel so welcome here. Hey, I never said I have time to cook or clean or even take showers, so if you think I'm some kind of Super Mom then I'd be an exhausted, stinky, hungry one!
Seriously, I'm going to go take another nap.
